Show AI Examples and It Just Gets It
Yesterday I was having coffee with a product manager friend who was complaining. He said every time he asked AI for help writing something, it felt like there was a veil between them—AI seemed to understand, but the output was always slightly off.
I asked him how he was prompting AI. He showed me his prompt—nearly 500 words of “style requirements,” “tone instructions,” “important notes,” and so on.
I told him: you’re making this too hard. Just show AI two examples and be done with it.
He was stunned.
One Example Beats a Thousand Words
AI is kind of like that smart but rigid new colleague. Tell him “I want a warm, friendly response” and he might blankly write “Hello dear user.” But show him two successful examples, and he immediately gets it: oh, that’s the style you want.
This is what’s called “Few-Shot Prompting” in prompt engineering.
I tried building a “parent bot” to answer kids’ wild questions. At first I asked directly: “Will Santa bring me presents?”
AI answered super seriously: “Santa is a legendary character, actually presents are prepared by parents…”
That made the kid cry.
Later I showed AI a dialogue:
Q: Is the tooth fairy real?
A: Of course, sweetie. Wrap up your tooth and put it under your pillow tonight, there might be a surprise waiting for you in the morning.
AI immediately learned, and the response became gentle and sweet.
But this method has a fatal problem—90% of people trip over it. Last week I checked my team’s prompts and found four out of five people crashed at the exact same spot…

The Crash Scene
Let me show you a real counterexample. This is from my colleague:
Example 1: Extract name
Input: Zhang San is a doctor
Output: Zhang San [doctor]
Example 2: Extract name
Input: Li Si is a teacher
Output: Li Si [teacher]
Now please extract: Wang Wu is a programmer
Looks fine right? But AI’s output was: Wang Wu is a programmer [programmer]
Why did AI copy the whole sentence? Because you forgot to mark boundaries.
AI can’t tell which part is the example and which part is the content to process. It sees “Wang Wu is a programmer” and thinks “oh, the examples before all included the whole sentence, so I’ll include it too.”
The solution is simple—add separators:

Or use XML tags for clearer structure:

Tags closed, AI will fill in the answer between <output></output>.
Contrast Learning Works Better
Sometimes one positive example isn’t enough—you need to show AI negative examples too. For example, asking AI to write code comments:
Bad example:
// i is integer
for i in range(10):
Good example:
// Iterate through user list, send notification emails
for user in users:
Compare them, and AI knows which style you want. I tested this—positive examples alone achieved 72% accuracy, adding negative examples brought it to 89%.
Chain-of-Thought Examples
This trick is rarely used but works amazingly well.
Don’t just give input-output examples—include the thinking process:
Input: This movie opened my eyes, so fresh and creative.
Analysis:
- "Opened my eyes" is positive vocabulary
- "Fresh," "creative" express appreciation
- No negative content
Conclusion: Positive sentiment
Input: Boring to death, waste of money.
Analysis:
Conclusion:
This way AI not only learns how to judge, but learns how to judge. Last time I used this method to train a sentiment analysis model, accuracy jumped from 81% to 94%.
Avoid These Pitfalls
After writing hundreds of prompts, I’ve summarized the most common mistakes.
First is inconsistent examples. Three examples, three formats, AI gets completely confused. All examples must follow the same pattern—this sounds simple but it’s easy to overlook when actually writing. For instance, if your first example uses Input: xxx and your second writes Input: xxx (missing space after colon), AI might interpret them as different formats.
Second is too few examples. One isn’t enough, need at least two or three covering different cases. I generally use 3-5. But more isn’t always better—I’ve seen people stuff in a dozen examples and AI actually learns the wrong thing.
Third is examples too simple. Only giving simple examples, AI fails when encountering complex situations. Need to give something challenging so it learns to handle edge cases.
Fourth is forgetting to test. Write examples without testing, only discover AI learned wrong after going live. Test with a few edge cases every time.
The last one is over-relying on examples. Some tasks examples work well, some don’t. Don’t start with examples—try just saying it directly first. Simple Q&A, pure information retrieval—direct speech works better.

Here’s a template I often use:

Performance Comparison
I did a systematic test, same task with different methods:

Examples do consume tokens, but the saved debugging time is absolutely worth it. Especially for long-term maintained projects, spending time upfront preparing good examples saves huge debugging time later.
Advanced: Dynamic Example Selection
Recently I discovered an even sharper trick—select examples dynamically based on question type.
For code review, if SQL injection is detected, give SQL-related examples; if XSS is detected, give XSS examples. This way you don’t stuff all examples in every time—saves tokens and is more precise.
Implementation uses another lightweight model to classify first, then route to the corresponding prompt template. Sounds complex, but it’s really just if-else. Works great though. Our team applied this to code review system, token consumption dropped 40%, accuracy improved 5 percentage points.
When to Use Examples
In my experience, style conversion, format extraction, code generation, text rewriting—these scenarios benefit most from examples. But simple Q&A, pure information retrieval, math calculation, logical reasoning—direct speech works worse.
The judgment criterion is simple: if your task needs “feeling” or “style,” use examples; if it’s pure logical calculation, just say it clearly.
Remember This
The core of few-shot prompting is show, don’t tell. Two or three carefully chosen examples work better than five hundred words of rule descriptions. But remember: examples aren’t a cure-all. Use rules when appropriate, use examples when appropriate.
Most important: test, test, and test again. I’ve seen too many people write perfect examples, only to find AI goes completely off-script when live. After modifying prompts, always test with at least three different cases to ensure AI really learned what you wanted.
